Wendy and Roger get firsts

Sunday July 12, a mix of winds from the south made for interesting racing. There wasn’t enough wind to set a reach mark, but occasionally we got a good puff, and then again occasionally there wasn’t much wind at all. And of course, the wind shifted unpredictably from side to side. So, results varied among the four races:

A breezy moment between races

July 11 races

Typical Falcon Lake summer weather; nice breeze, allegedly coming from the North, but with lots of shifts to make sailing interesting.

First Keel Boat Race of 2020

Saturday June 27th we had a lively wind gusting up to 15 knots from the South West (mostly!). Five keel boats were on the start line for the first race, plus a few dinghies out to practice. Unfortunately, Dave’s tiller broke when he was doing well in the first race, so he had to retire without finishing. The rest of the fleet had a good time rounding the marks as quickly as possible:

June 27 & 28 Weekend

It looks like the weather this weekend will be great for starting club racing; Warm with winds from the West on Saturday, and from the South on Sunday.

We will hold our first keelboat races of the year on Saturday, starting at one pm, hopefully running 3 short races. We  can’t follow the “participation” approach of previous years, where we invited lots of people onto the boats. This time the people on each boat must be  from the same household, or people who are regularly in contact, or a minimum number of people who are willing to be in contact for this event. It looks like we will have five boats on the starting line. Anyone who wants to sail a dinghy in the same race is welcome, but it will just be practice race for them, and they should stay out of the way of the keel boats when they are racing. That means a dinghy can still start at the same time, but it has to avoid getting in the way of the starting keel boats.

On Sunday, it should be a couple of degrees warmer, so a great occasion to race dinghies. We will try to run up to 5 races after 1 pm, as usual.

The following weekends, we will have dinghy races in the afternoons, weather permitting, except on the three days reserved for keel boat racing.

2020 Races Can Begin this Weekend with a Revised Notice of Race

MSA has sanctioned our race program for 2020, so we can start racing this weekend.

We have been advised to adjust the wording of our Notice of Race in order to comply with provincial health regulations as they stand now. Therefore:

Starting immediately, and continuing until further notice, all FYC Notices of Race are amended to include the following:

All racers, volunteers and race management people must;

  • Pass the COVID-19 self-assessment test before coming to the club each day. https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/  Anyone with COVID19 symptoms must not come to the club.
  • Ensure that the number of people congregating is less than 50.
  • Travel with individuals within their own household and jurisdiction.
  • Maintain social distancing (2 metres/6 feet). Avoid all physical contact.
  • Maintain good handwashing and respiratory hygiene
  • Minimize the number of people in the dock/launching/rigging/parking areas.
  • Not invite visitors/guests to the facilities.
  • Nothing to be shared.  Everything must be provided by the individual. Avoid sharing tools or equipment. If shared disinfect affected tools after use.
  • Avoid the common courtesy of helping others with their lines or accepting help unless there is an immediate need to avoid injury or damage. Wash hands or use sanitizer after handling someone else’s boat or lines.
  • Responding to an incident on or off the water (sailor in the water/other injury) may cause the responsible person to come in physical contact with the sailor. As such participants should always have gloves, masks and hand sanitizer available to protect themselves, and sailors, should contact become necessary.
  • When required, wear gloves that can be washed after use or put aside for several days – do not put gloves in your pocket – virus can live on surfaces up to 7 days – wash hands after taking off the gloves.
  • Safety Boat and Committee Boat should be sanitized after every use;

These amendments to the rules replace the ones we published last week, and may change again quite quickly, based on advice MSA gets from public health.  Watch our website for changes.

Changes to FYC Notices of Race

In order to comply with provincial health regulations, we have to change some of the things we do automatically.  Please read this list carefully, for the safety of all of us.  It is going to feel unsociable, but we can still sail, race, and chat – at a distance!

Starting immediately, and continuing until further notice, all FYC Notices of Race are amended to include the following:

All participants must;

  • Self-screen before coming to the club. https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/  anyone with COVID19 symptoms must not come to the club.
  • Follow the club guidelines on hygiene, sanitation, physical distancing, maximum number of people congregating, and to preventing the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Do not invite visitors/guests to the facilities.
  • Nothing to be shared.  Everything must be provided by the individual. Avoid sharing tools or equipment. If shared disinfect affected tools after use.

FYC Racing Report 2019

We had a good year of racing, sailing a total of 39 races in the club dinghy series, plus the Sumer of Sailing Regatta, two sailing clinics, and three days of keelboat racing.

17 skippers participated in the dinghy race series.  Nine skippers completed fifteen races, the number required to be competitive in the final results.

The keelboat races on June 23, August 4 and September 1 were well attended; three boats on the line in June, five in August and September.

Al Cade was named the most improved sailor at the AGM, for becoming a successful keel boat racer in 2019.
